Watching children grow is one of my favorite perks of being a photographer. As children visit me for their milestone portraits it is always interesting to watch their true colors emerge as they become more comfortable with me and the photographing process (that includes both inside and outside the studio). Vivian has visited me over and over again over the past couple years and to say that she's gotten used to the process would be an understatement. I crack up everytime I see the picture I captured of her "pirate" face! Vivian has an energetic, fun, spunk about her and her 2 Year Milestone session was all of that.

It's Your Wedding...Get the Photography That You Deserve!

The biggest mistake a bride can make is to undervalue her wedding photography. So many brides have tried to save a few dollars on their wedding day by hiring a friend, or having a family member take their wedding photos. “I can’t tell you how many people I encounter on a weekly basis that share their wedding photography horror stories with me,” says Tonya Wilson of Wilson Whitaker Photography. “They hired a friend or uncle because he only charged a few hundred dollars. In the end they are stuck with images that they completely dislike (if they get anything at all). Now the memories of such a beautiful day are blurred by the bad taste of amateur photography. This makes me so sad every time I hear it.”

So now that you know to hire a trusted professional photographer for your wedding day, here are 5 qualities to look for when meeting with your local professionals.

1. Personal Touch: Small, local studios also called boutique studios take pride in being small businesses and want to exceed your expectations! A trusted, local wedding professional first works to establish a rapport with its clients through a consultation and/or meeting. Interested clients can view genuine samples of work that the photographers themselves have captured and are encouraged to ask questions in an effort to create a custom fit for the engaged couple.

When choosing a local professional, clients can also quickly gauge what style and personality the photographers have and if it will be a good fit for their special day. Your photographer’s personality is going to play a huge role in your wedding day experience. You will spend a great majority of time with him/her. Many times photographers are not only there to capture your big day but also become a part of it. You want to be certain your personalities mesh.

A great photographer will stay in touch with you throughout the wedding planning process and will not book another wedding event on your day. They will attend to your needs not only before your big day, but also the day of and in the weeks, months and years following your wedding. Tonya Wilson states, “When you pick your wedding photographer, you are not just picking a photographer for your wedding day. You spend time establishing a relationship together and as you and your family grows, so does the photographer/client relationship.”

2. Extensive Experience: The local wedding professional is just that, a trusted professional! Recognizing the large number of people who own really sophisticated cameras, do you believe that automatically qualifies them to be a photographer? I would ask you to ponder this. Would you let anyone who owned a scissors cut your hair? I know I wouldn’t! I carefully select a trained professional when seeking someone to cut my hair and that’s just my hair, it will grow back. I can only hope you would do the same when looking for a photographer, especially since your wedding day is one of the most special days of your life.

And if you need a little more proof, a professional photographer takes pride in the years of experience they’ve banked working events similar to yours. They have the training, creative eye and experience to accommodate for environmental challenges, such as the constant changes in lighting conditions your day will entail as well as wedding party and family dynamics, utilizing interesting poses, groupings and candid moments that you won’t know you missed until the sun sets on your wedding day.

3. Equipment and Insurance: Professional photographers pride themselves on their equipment. If you don’t believe me, just ask a pro if they think Canon or Nikon has the upper hand (ok, don’t do that unless you have a pot of coffee and a comfy chair on hand since you’ll be there a while). But having top of the line equipment and knowing how to use it when conditions are optimal and when they are challenging is crucial to creating beautiful wedding images. They not only have equipment but backup equipment (and backups, to the backups) as well as insurance to cover it and any liabilities incurred. For pros, their use of top of the line equipment extends beyond the wedding day. Backup drives, software and editing suites are also part of the usual repertoire for a quality artist. An amateur just won’t be able to justify the expense of this top of the line equipment and proper insurance coverage.

4. Quality: An independent, trusted photographer doesn’t employ the masses. When you sign a contract with the photographer you are signing an agreement to work with them! Rest assured you will work closely with them to finalize your intricate details on a consistent basis, and not their intern, subcontractor or other personnel. Most independent artists are meticulous when it comes to the quality of artwork they create from the choosing of images to the paper they use even to the packages they deliver your images in. A professional is putting her reputation and livelihood on the line.

As stated above, a small photography studio values the rapport you establish with them. They work with you to create a custom fit to what you are looking for not only in terms of style, images and products after your special day, but also while building a relationship that will hopefully surpass your wedding day and bring you back for your future family portraits.

5. Custom Products: Boutique photography studios have access to top of the line products and are experts at creating custom wedding albums, canvases, wall collages and much, much more. If not, I'm here to report that it's a WONDERFUL organization, started in 2010, that encourages the public to shop locally through coupons and deals in the area and at the same time gives back to the local community, especially its schools! In fact, in reference to White Bear Lake Area Schools in particular, GO KIDS DAY has already given $4,500.00! WOW! I had to read that again becuase that's an awesome amount of money that is definitely needed in these hard budget times.

Santa and Albert's Holiday Play

This holiday season experience a brand new, lively, audience participation-filled play titled, “The North Pole Goes Green," starring Santa and his trusted elf Albert at Bachmans on Lyndale (6010 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis, MN (612) 861-7676). The show and overall Santa experience lasts through this weekend and you don't want to miss your chance on either Sat. or Sun. at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. or 2 p.m.

There is no cost for this exquisite event and after an approx. 25 min. show (put on by Santa and Albert the Elf, both professional storytellers), there is a carol sing-along (where kids are invited up on stage) and then there are opportunities to get photos in a comfortable and relaxing set. Be advised, you must bring your own camera to take photos but the images you will capture will no doubt be priceless!

18 Month Milestone: Claire

Scheduling your child's milestone portraits can be nerve wracking. You start to wonder and question if they will cooperate for their session...Will they smile? Will the photographer capture the spunk you know and see on a daily basis in your own environment etc. Then you start to ponder the outfits you picked out...did you pack the right props...enough snacks...the list goes on and on.

Bringing my own child to the studio for her 18 Month pictures, I can honestly say that Tonya takes all your worries away! She's soooo patient and flexible. She allowed not only Claire the time she needed to warm up to her, the studio, the bright lights and the process (but I've also witnessed the countless other children she's helped to do this too.) She does a wonderful job of getting children to be themselves always gets the shots parents hope for. Needless to say when I saw Claire's photos I was more than impressed with the collection that was captured! Looking at just a sample of her images, you wouldn't even know that she's a "1 outfit" kind of gal and immediately started crying when I tried to push the limits to get photographs of her in her Christmas dress.

Photos like the ones below are priceless to me and my family because we love and adore the little girl in them. Your children's photos are undoubtedly priceless to you too, so I encourage you to find a photographer that knows his/her clients and is able to get those exceptional images. I've found my lifelong photographer...now the question is, have you?

Winterfest Arrives on Saturday in White Bear Lake!

Did you enjoy a little too much turkey over Thanksgiving? Did the pie get the best of you this past weekend? If you are feeling anything like I am, it's time to work off some calories and the Jingle Bear 5k is a perfect way to begin!

Starting at 9:00 AM the Jingle Bear Run/Walk is a fun and festive way to kick off your holidays by helping others! Wear a holiday themed costume and/or tie jingle bells to your shoelaces (we supply the bells). You can run or walk a 5 kilometer route along the beautiful shore of White Bear Lake and celebrate the season by bringing a non-perishable food item for the White Bear Lake Area Food shelf. Afterwards you are invited to enjoy a breakfast buffet at the VFW. Registration is just $20 but you must register by Thurs. Dec. 1st. Don't let your kiddos miss out either! For just $15 you can register your little ones for a Kid's Fun 150 Meter Run.

After the race, stroll through downtown White Bear Lake and join in the fun activities that are part of the White Bear Lake Winter Fest. From 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM you are invited to slide down a giant slide, bounce in a bouncy house, take a wagon ride and visit many food, art and craft vendors. Tracey and Dave had their first date at Origami Restaurant (30 North First Street, Minneapolis, MN 55401, (612)333-8430) and it was really unique to photograph them at the spot their relationship ignited! As we continued to St. Anthony Main and the Stone Arch Bridge I couldn't help but notice that the weather was perfect and so was the couple. Meet Hayley, Wilson Whitaker's 2012 Senior Representative! We have been delighted to work with Hayley as she is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. She's a very personable girl and never stops smiling. Hayley is a very committed soccer and hockey player and enjoys hanging out with her friends whenever she can.

After rescheduling Hayley's initial session due to the heat wave we had in July, we had an amazing day. We started out in Stillwater and Hayley was up for whatever I suggested as well as some of her own ideas. It's an exciting time!!! The MN State Fair began today. We invite you to come visit us at the MN Red Hot Real Estate booth at the MN State Fair on Sat. Aug. 27th, 2011! Meet Wyatt ~ An adorable, tiny newborn who was photographed at just one week! Wyatt's parents had been working within the adoption process and were told just a weekend before his arrival that he would be coming home to them. I can't believe I've known this couple for over ten years! We started out long ago marching in the U of M marching band and I've been fortunate to watch their family take shape. After working closely with them at their wedding, and then capturing photos as they prepared to welcome Ethan into the world, I feel honored that they allowed me to photograph their family through an OperationLove portrait session. Summer Reading

For most of you summer is in full swing and that means ball games, soccer, swim lessons, play dates, yard work and so much more. As an avid reader and past teacher I am a firm believer in the importance of summer reading for kids. There really is such a thing as summer learning loss and by taking just a bit of time each day to read something (books, comics, magazines, cereal boxes, poems...ANYTHING) your kids reading habits (and their future teachers) will thank them!

After receiving a mailing from the St. Paul Public Library about a summer reading program that they provide, I was doing a little bit of browsing on the Ramsey County Library site. I'm a current resident myself and figured since the studio is about 2 blocks from the White Bear location I'd check out what cool things they had to offer your tots, teens and in-betweens this summer. I'm happy to report there are LOTS of things going on at your local library locations for kids of all ages. I found 4 things in particular from the Kids' World section of the Ramsey County Library's homepage that I've commented on below.

Bookawocky - Through Aug. 21st, children can participate in the library's summer reading program. The program is designed to inspire children of all ages to read as much as they would like in the summer months. There is a special tracking sheet for ages 4 and under and a "minutes" recording sheet for children 5-12. Either way your children can present their recording sheets at various times throughout their reading for prizes!

PAWS To READ - On Tuesdays (June 28th, July 19th and July 26th) children between the ages of 5 and 8 can work on their reading skills by reading to registered therapy dogs in the library's comfortable and relaxed atmosphere where doegs listen and don't "tease, laugh, or judge". Register your little one for your 20 min. slot through the Shoreview Ramsey County Library.

Family Film Night - Also on Tuesday July 26th and Aug. 23rd at 6:30 p.m. enjoy movie classics on the big screen at the Maplewood Ramsey Couny Library. Contact Maplewood for movie titles.

Creative Canvas Art Club - On Thursday July 7th and 14th at 2pm children ages 7 to 12 can join the Creative Canvas Art Club to create paintings with oil pastels. Space is limited; Registration has already begun for the Shoreview library location. Call the Children's Librarian, Angie at 651-486-2314 to register.

There are so many more cool activities to check out so don't stop at the 4 that I reported on. There are various special events, storytime slots (even in various languages) and Make and Take Storytimes too! Family portraits are essential! They transform a house into a home, put the people you hold most dear to your heart on your walls, create conversation between guests at dinner parties or family gatherings and MOST importantly, they tell the story of your family in the moment that you were captured by the camera.

Your family portraits are a very important investment! Careful planning should go into what each person will wear for the big event. In the spirit of this, I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could dress an imaginary family of four for less than $100. You might ask why I would be inclined to do so. First of all, yes, I did like paper dolls when I was little and this experience brought me back to the fun I used to have in playing them. But, in all honesty, I would rather see your family's hard earned "moola" used to order the perfect prints, canvases and frames to illustrate the experience you had caught on camera, than a receipt or two from your shopping trip showing outrageous prices.

As if babies aren't cute enough!

We all love the miraculous and ever so fine features of a newborn baby. They have tiny fingers, tiny toes, and soft, wrinkled, new skin. They also have a delightful "new baby" smell...I'm talking about the one that just about causes me to run to the nearest store to purchase a pink bottle of baby lotion, not the one that frequently drifts from their diaper in the first days, weeks and months of their life.

Sunshine, Puddles and Spring Portraits

The subtle signs of spring are upon us. Just last weekend I woke extra early with my daughter (she has yet to figure out that we like to sleep until at least 7am on the weekends) and heard the faint sounds of a bird or two chirping in the distance. It was music to my ears! This can only mean warmer weather, less snow, more melting, and the reorganization of my family's closets. If you are anything like me I am not only itching to open up the windows, but I also anticipate swapping the heavy sweaters, boots and jackets for clothes with bright colors and less fabric, and flip flops.

Spring also brings about cheerful children who are no longer bogged down by cold or flu. Capture their renewed spunk in a Spring Portrait Session. The studio is now scheduling sessions and we encourage you to take advantage of this great opportunity. In this time of year, there really is nothing better than the warmer weather moving in, reorganized closets AND new poses of children smiling from the shelves and walls.

A Great Time at the Wedding Fair!

Thanks to all of you that visited our booth at the TCBA Wedding Fair yesterday. Due to some luck, we were able to take advantage of a double-sized display booth. It took a little bit of last minute design work by Tonya and Chrissy Miller of Christina Lynn Interiors, but we think you'll agree that the resulting booth had the desired impact. For those of you that weren't able to make it, here's what you missed:

We wanted to get that homey feeling of being in your living room. Well... we didn't invade your living room, but just pretend your relaxing at home, and your walls too are decorated with fabulous photos.

Here are a couple more photos with a little closer look. Those of you on Facebook might recognize the winner of our backdrop survey hanging in the middle. That would be "Cellar Stairs Teal" though it looks more steel in the harsh convention center lighting. And on the right, our handout card for this show starring Crystal and Aaron (thanks guys!)

Next we see a couple of potential clients being very impressed by our 8"x20" coffee table album, which is always an eye-catcher and a crowd favorite. On the right, Sabrina always delivers service with a smile; here she awaits the crowd after the fashion show. The new booth floor plan was interesting because we split our samples between the 2 corner tables. Because of this, I know that some of you out there didn't get to both tables, and thus didn't see all of our samples. We'd love for you to come into our studio at any time and see what you missed.

Lastly, a couple more closeups of some of the details. Our very popular boudoir sessions are featured on the left (yes, we ran out of brochures for these again! Call for details.) We also want to give a special thanks to Christina Lynn Interiors for not only helping with the staging but also lending us the lamp and candlestick, which were a great addition to our living room display. Too bad they wouldn't let us have an open flame. Thanks!

Hello! My name is Kristen Thomas and I recently joined the WWP team.  I thought it would be fun to introduce myself in an acrostic style post. Enjoy!

T - Ten Things I Do Everyday : Make my bed, Watch the Today Show, Make a list, Complete at least 2 household chores, Check Facebook, Read and Snuggle my daughter Claire, Read something for myself, Talk to or Text my hubby @ work, Create something (dinner, a craft, wrap a present, etc.) and Pray.

E - Excitement : My hobbies include scrounging around at garage sales for the perfect inexpensive treat, painting stools for children (take a peak if you'd like...Stool Pictures), spending time with family and friends, gardening, reading, cooking and baking, taking pictures of my daughter and playing golf.

A - Academics : I have a master's degree in education (also the reason for the style of post) and taught 2nd grade in North Branch, MN for six years. I'm passionate about reading instruction and believe that we must read to our children from the day they are born if we want to help them become a successful student and a life-long reader.

M - My Journey to WWP : In 2007 my husband (then bf) asked me to marry him.  Meeting Tonya and Dave at the Twin Cities Bridal Fair was meant to be!  Our wedding day was perfect and thankfully we have the awesome album and prints to prove it. Just recently our paths crossed again and I feel so lucky to write that my interest in photography and their vacancy equaled an exciting fit. At WWP I will be sharing many responsibilities with Tonya and Dave. Some include writing blog posts, updating our fans on Facebook and Twitter, organizing new and upcoming campaigns, scheduling appointments and helping all to realize the wonderful service the studio provides! I can't wait to interact with you!

Awesome Gallery Wrap -- Wedding Collage

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned an awesome new product that we had on display at our wedding booth -- the gallery wrap wedding collage that displayed almost 50 of our favorite images from Jeffery and Elizabeth's wedding on one canvas. It's a great way to show of a good summary of the whole wedding day at one glance (though I doubt anyone would be able to take it all in at one glance. Well, I finally had time to get a couple of photos taken of it so I can show you what I'm talking about. Here it is:

Jeffery and Elizabeth recently stopped by the studio to discuss their album design draft. While they were here, they had a chance to see this sample for the first time. They loved it so much, they're working hard now to pick out their 49 favorite photos to put in their own collage.

'Tis the season... for Seniors!

In all this talk about the wedding fair season, we don't want to forget about the other planning season that's going on right now -- high school seniors. While we're meeting with brides, we're also getting ready to roll out our senior portrait program for this year. Here is a die-cut promotional card that we'll be looking to distribute at White Bear Lake high school, and other schools nearby, as well as with our friends in Mondovi, WI.

We'll also be reviving our school rep program, this year called the Model Student program. From our web site:

Our small studio operation allows us to offer a creative and personal experience that's very different for each senior. We don't churn out portraits on an assembly line like some larger studios. With the TCBA wedding fair this past Sunday, two of our January wedding fairs are now in the can. Now we're in the process of contacting all of the wonderful brides with whom we had short conversations on the past two Sundays, and who expressed an interest in us contacting them. If you're not on this list and you have questions, we would love to schedule a consultation with you! It's a much better opportunity to sit down, look at samples, ask questions, and get to know each other than the zoo that is any wedding fair. Just give us a call and we'll schedule you in.

It seems that our new booth layout was a success, other than the Wedding Fair organizer complaining that we didn't have her couch to sleep on overnight.... Well, gotta keep things fresh. At the next TCBA, we're discussing using our walls with the new layout, and see how that works. We should have a couple more new samples by then as well.

As all of this wedding excitement rolls forward, we haven't forgotten about the next big season -- High School Seniors. Is it that time of year again already?? We should be rolling out our 2011 Senior information in the next couple of weeks, so keep an eye out for that.

In the mean time, try not to freeze this weekend when it gets to 15 below!

Fun at the Bridal Party!

Today, we spent a wonderful day at Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine's Bridal Party at the Depot in downtown Minneapolis. This is a new wedding fair for us, and we had a good time. The venue is a bit smaller than the TCBA fair, and gave us a little more time to talk to potential clients. It also gave the clients a chance to look through our albums and samples without risk of being elbowed out of the way. If you stopped by to see us today, thanks for doing so. We also got a chance to try out a new booth layout. Since the alotted space at this fair was different than at TCBA, we couldn't use our comfy livingroom set. We spent Saturday afternoon mocking up the booth in our studio space -- trying different layouts and pieces of furniture. We ended up using two of our chairs and a table as the main pieces. We liked the change enough that we may roll with the change for next week's fair.

We changed up the samples on the wall too, including a brand new 30"x30" canvas wrap collage. This piece is a gridwork of 1 large image, and 48 smaller images from Jeff and Elizabeth's wedding last year. It even has their names printed on the sides of the wrap. Very nice. It even gave our 8"x20" acrylic-covered Cancun album a run for the money for being the most talked about piece on display.

All in all, a good day. Now, to think about the TCBA fair next weekend. To change, or not to change the booth.

Jeff + Elizabeth - Twin Cities Wedding

You know when you meet a couple and from the first moment you can tell that they are just perfect for one another? Jeff and Elizabeth are that couple. In all the times we spent leading up to the big day, I could see it.

On the wedding day, Elizabeth was actually ready before Jeff which as far as brides and grooms go that doesn't happen very often. But she was ready to just be with him and spend the day together and get on with it, so to speak. I was thrilled for Jeff to see Elizabeth in her knock out dress and ruby red lips. He kissed her so hard that his lips ended up being the ones that were red.

I just want you to know that being a part of your wedding day was very special. I felt the love you guys had for each other and the love your friends and family have for you. Thank you!

Not only is Elizabeth beautiful, she has brains, too! Check out those shoes... they are ballroom dancing shoes so that she could 'dance' through the day without any foot pain. I may need to get a pair.

The reception was held at the beautiful Earle Brown Heritage Center.

They didn't have just one delicious cake, but two wonderful cakes. The Kransekake (boy I hope I'm spelling that right) is a traditional Norwegian cake made for celebrations just like this one. Since Jeff and Elizabeth are extra-nice people, they also provided mini Kransekake cakes for each guest to take home.

I think the fall colors were at peak at the exact moment we took these images.

A Smile Anyone Could Love...

WWP Web Site Revamp

In this day and age, a web site is often the most prominant face of a company. We've been very happy with the site that Richard at 3232Design did for us last year, but as always we want to keep it updated. So... while not exactly back to the drawing board, we're in the process of making some subtle changes to our site to keep it fresh.

The first thing you'll notice is a change to our front page. This change will enhance our efforts to focus on our best product lines. With our emphasis on kids & families, seniors and weddings, we want to make it obvious to a first time visitor what we do.

Perhaps most significant, we'll be including a snippet of our blog, automatically imported from the blog site, so you can get the latest news and promotions right on our front page. We'll be embracing our connections to Facebook and Twitter with 'fan' links right on the front page, too.

This is a work in progress, and we're not even set on the final layout, but we're having fun with the design process.

Who wouldn't want an underwater office?

OK... I'll say "no" to the underwater office. With the warm weather earlier in the week we had an unwelcome surprise of water in the basement - lots of water! I don't think I've ever run laps up and down the stairs with computer equipment and files so fast. I arrived home on Tuesday from running errands to find a flood in the office as well as rest of our basement. After a few days of clean up and drying out, I'm nearly ready to tackle the task of setting everything back up again. I'm sorry to any of you whose emails I haven't returned this week - I'll have things up and running again this weekend and will resume communication with the world on Monday. Until then - have a wonderful Valentine's Day! - THW

Wow! What a weekend! We spent an incredible day at the Twin City Bridal Wedding Fair today and met with SO many wonderful brides and grooms-to-be that I'm feeling a little hoarse tonight. Our booth went through a major overhaul to better showcase our work and style and the feedback was great. A big thank you to my husband, Don, for all your hard work helping with the booth construction and Stacy for being a great representative of our company. The crowds rush through slapping address labels and feverishly flipping through albums and you only have seconds at times to talk with eager brides. I can't wait to start sitting down one on one in the coming days with those we made connections with today to talk details and take it a little slower. I hope everyone who attended had a great time because we sure did. Now enjoy a few photos from the show of our new booth... I'm going to sit down and put my feet up - finally! ~THW

Another year has flown by...

Wow! Can you believe 2009 has already arrived? Where did 2008 go?!? As we look forward to next year, I think we should to take time to reflect on last year and appreciate all the special moments that we shared with friends and family. Dave and his wife celebrated the birth of baby Tristan and my husband and I welcomed our baby, Wyatt, into our lives. With expanding families and more clients than ever we had our hands more than full but that's what makes life interesting and enjoyable. I loved the time spent meeting with clients and hearing about how busy all their lives were as well - many with wedding plans on the horizon or new babies of their own about to arrive.

Thank you to all our clients that helped make 2008 great. Here's to another great year in 2009 - I bet it will be even better! Below is a collage of images - one from each shoot we did last year.
